Spark / Rent & Bill Reporting

Turn your bills into credit history.

Your rent, utilities, and phone bill already prove you're responsible with money. Spark reports those payments to major credit bureaus.

Which bills can you report?

Spark supports six categories of recurring payments. Each is verified independently and reported as its own tradeline.

Rent

Report your monthly rent payment to Equifax and Experian. Must be for your primary residence, with no active mortgage or other rent tradeline already reported. Payments must be made online to a verified property management company or rent platform (e.g. Yardi, AppFolio, Buildium).

Telco

Internet, cable TV & cell phone

Report one recurring telco payment. Payments must be made online to a verified telco provider.

Electric

Report one recurring electric payment. Must be for your primary residence, paid online to a verified utility company.

Gas

Report one recurring gas payment. Must be for your primary residence, paid online to a verified utility company.

Water

Report one recurring water payment. Must be for your primary residence, paid online to a verified utility company.

Bundled Utilities

Gas, electric & water combined

If your utility company bundles gas, electric, and/or water into a single bill, Spark can report that as one bundled payment.

24-month back reporting boost

Most credit-building services only report new payments going forward. With Spark, up to 24 months of your verified past rent and bill payments can be reported retroactively.

Up to 24 months retroactive

Spark can report up to 24 months of verified past rent and bill payments to the credit bureaus — giving your credit file immediate depth from day one.

Instant payment history

Payment history is the single largest factor in your credit score (41% of VantageScore). Back reporting adds months of positive history in a single reporting cycle.

Faster results

Instead of waiting months for new payments to accumulate, back reporting lets you leverage payments you've already made — accelerating your credit-building timeline.

Works alongside ongoing reporting

Back reporting gives you a head start, and every new monthly payment keeps building on top of it — compounding your credit history month after month.

Experian

Rent

Rent must be for your primary residence with no active mortgage or other rent tradeline already reported to Experian. Payments must be processed via a verified provider or rent platform.

Equifax

Rent must be for your primary residence with no active mortgage or other rent tradeline already reported to Equifax. Payments must be processed via a verified provider or rent platform.

Eligibility requirements

To ensure accurate reporting, Spark has a few requirements for each payment category.

Online bank payments only

Spark verifies payments through your bank connection. Cash, check, or money order payments cannot be verified and are not eligible for reporting.

Primary residence

Rent and utility payments must be for your primary residence. Investment properties, vacation homes, or commercial leases are not eligible.

Verified providers

Payments must be made to a verified property management company, rent platform, utility provider, or telco company. Spark cross-references providers against its verification database.

No duplicate tradelines

For rent, you cannot have an active mortgage or another active rent tradeline already reported to the same bureau. This ensures clean, non-conflicting credit data.
